A Fresh Breeze from the North! Images of Nature in the Helsinki School

The "Helsinki School" has become known since the 1990s as a group of photographic artists linked to the Aalto University of Arts, Design and Architecture. The group, far from being homogeneous, brings together different generations of artists and distinct stylistic and thematic characteristics. The numerous obvious references to nature in several of the photographers’ image series, however, form a common thread. The exhibition sets out to trace these landscape images and nature experiences. All Helsinki School photo artists represented here engage to a substantial degree in the subject of nature or landscape: Elina Brotherus, Joakim Eskildsen, Ilkka Halso, Tiina Itkonen, Jaakko Kahilianiemi, Sanna Kannisto, Anni Leppälä, Susanna Majuri, Riitta Päiväläinen, Jorma Puranen, Mikko Rikala, and Santeri Tuori. An awareness of the links between nature and culture and an intuitive sense of space is apparent in all of these works.

In conjunction with this exhibition a new book focusing on images of nature in the Helsinki School will be published by Hatje Cantz (Helsinki School Volume VI).
