Modern Art at St. Anne's Museum Quarter
Both the modern art gallery Kunsthalle and the historical priory St. Annen-Kloster form part of St. Anne’s Museum Quarter. Almost 9,000 square meters of modern and historical exhibition spaces, courtyards, gardens, and the late Gothic cloister of 1512 invite visitors to explore and experience unique insights into the interactions between art, religion, and society. A museum shop and the coffee shop Kunstcafé complete the diverse offer. The modern Kunsthalle St. Annen was constructed as an extension to St. Anne’s Museum on the site of the former monastery church of St. Anne’s Priory, built in 1502 to 1515.
The architecture is impressive. The prismatic structure with its steep tower rising 20 meters high deliberately recreates the dimensions of former St. Anne’s Church, which stood here until the fire of 1843. The new building retains the original ground plan and integrates all remains of ruins. Kunsthalle features exhibitions from the permanent collection and special exhibitions on art after 1945.
