Rituals have shaped human existence across geographical and historical borders since time immemorial. Rituals are often characterized by a fixed set of activities, giving order and meaning to experience. They serve to structure social life and to create a sense of communality. One of the best-known rituals is the prayer, which therefore features in the title of this exhibition. Prayers, primarily as acts of intercession and thanksgiving, play a vital role in many denominations and cultures. How do rituals shape our everyday interactions? What is worthy of becoming a ritual and when does it become meaningless?
For “Like a Prayer”, St. Petri zu Lübeck and Kunsthalle St. Annen are bringing together five international contemporary positions that deal with gestures and rites in their artistic works. The themes range from coping with grief and the loss of a loved one to the act of apology and the celebration of community and identity. The works of Belia Zanna Geetha Brückner, Daiki Kimoto, Mark Morris, Juan Ricaurte-Riveros, and Ngozi Schommers reflect rituals not only in terms of content, but also in the artistic use of materials and techniques. The exhibition includes the media of installation, sculpture, painting, video, and performance.
As a place of contemplation and art, St. Petri zu Lübeck provides the ideal setting for a present-day engagement with rituals and their significance in our society and everyday life.
